Introduction

At St Joseph’s, our new EYFS provision will be designed to be a vibrant and engaging environment where children thrive through play and exploration. We will prioritise high-quality early excellence resources that are carefully organised to optimise learning opportunities.

Our provision incorporates features of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, proven to facilitate children’s learning best. This includes:

  • A well-structured learning environment that stimulates curiosity and encourages independent exploration.
  • A variety of play areas, such as a cozy reading corner, imaginative role-play spaces, sensory stations, and construction zones, to cater to diverse interests and learning styles.
  • Accessible and inclusive resources that promote collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Opportunities for both child-initiated and adult-guided activities, allowing for a balance between self-directed discovery and scaffolded learning experiences.
  • Overall, our nursery indoor provision at St. Joseph’s will be designed to be a dynamic and enriching space where children feel empowered to explore, learn, and grow to their fullest potential.

What to wear / Uniform

We believe that our uniform contributes to the sense of pride felt by all our pupils in the school community that they belong to. We request that all nursery pupils wear our school uniform. Further details can be found on our school uniform page. Nursery children do not need a PE kit.

We do request that all nursery children have a bag with a spare set of clothes, including underwear, in nursery for any little accidents that may occur.

Breakfast Club and Afterschool Clubs

Breakfast Club

The breakfast club at St Joseph’s is open Monday – Friday (term time only), from 7.30am – 8.40am.  The cost of a session is £3.00 per child. St Joseph’s do not currently provide breakfast on site. Parents must supply breakfast for their children during the current academic year apart from fruit and refreshments. Parents must sign their child into the provision and complete a registration form. All pupils new to Breakfast club must first complete a registration form. Children will be in our care and will not leave the school premises. We will escort the children to the yard at the start of the school day.

Our aims are

  • To provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment for your child
  • To encourage children to meet, play, learn and work together with other children and adults before school
  • To encourage a healthy nutritious breakfast before school
  • To provide activities and games so the children enjoy new challenges
  • To encourage children to choose their own toys and games and to kindly tidy them away after playing
  • To promote Equal Opportunities at all times

Due to the increased numbers of children attending breakfast club we need at least 24 hours’ notice for your child to attend. This is for the children who attend on an adhoc basis only, not for the ones who are booked in regularly.  If you require any further information, please contact the St Joseph’s School office. Places can be booked by emailing info@stjb.bwcet.com.

Afterschool Clubs

The school currently does not have an afterschool club but an outside agency collects some children registered with them after school. Their details are below:

Nursery Second Consultation

The nursery opening was postponed as Gateshead Council raised an objection.  The school then sent out a second consultation.

As well as a letter from Gateshead Council we received 13 other responses which included a negative objection from a local school with a nursery and an objection from a Governors Resources Committee.  2 other local schools replied to the consultation, one of which had a nursery.  Both schools were in favour for St Joseph’s opening a nursery.

The other responses were all in favour of the opening although one did raise a concern about parking.
